Building of new baroque fortress started at the beginning of the 18th century. The most important person was general Johann von Beckers. He was very dedicated to build the fortress. He loved it so much that he wanted to be bricked in the walls of the Water Gate after he dies. The fortress was in a shape of a large irregular star and  had 4 gates.
In 20th century the old walls were destroyed. Today we can see only small part of the Crown fortification on the left bank of the River Drava. On the right bank we can see the Water gate and the Water Tower.

Every gate had a bridge that rose every night. The gate didn't open till the next morning. The legend says that the  Emperor Joseph II wanted to enter  TvrÄ‘a during his first visit in 1768. But he came after sunset and even to him it wasn't allowed to open the city gate. So he had to spend the night in Upper Town Inn.

At the beginning of the 19th century, French emperor Napoleon attacked Habsbourg Monarchy and its capital. The whole treasury of the Empire was moved to a safer place. It was bricked in the walls of Osijek fortress. The legend says that one chest remained in the walls and nobody found it.
